Gevangenpoort
Oldest prison in new clothes
The Gevangenpoort has been a museum of criminal law in the Netherlands for 125 years now. Here, visitors can see how prisoners were locked up, tried and punished from the middle ages onward. When the museum needed to be restored and refurbished, we were asked to help.
New interior
Together with Eklund_Terbeek Architecten, who took the design for their account, we built the entire new interior of the museum. We realized all kinds of furniture elements and produced the air-conditioned display cases with non-reflecting glass.
Quality furnishings
Gielissen built all kinds of furniture: tables, chairs, highchairs for children and the huge wall unit concealing projection screens. We also came up with a solution for displaying rare "shame boards". These are wooden boards with text that convicts wore around their necks on the scaffold. They hang on a wall in cabinets of really thin plastic, so they are properly protected but still easily visible.
