Circular construction
at our best
Nationale-NederlandenUnlike some projects when we join the process a little later, we were part of this special Nationale-Nederlanden initiative from day one. Nationale-Nederlanden envisioned a sustainable and healthy work environment that reflects the company’s dynamic working style. This complete renovation of the offices in Rotterdam and The Hague is 89% circular, saves 2,722 tons of waste and reduces environmental impact by an incredible 70%, for which it was awarded WELL Platinum, the highest WELL certification.
Involved
from the start
Achieving such a huge ambition calls for close collaboration. That’s why, as a made-to-measure interior-builder, we collaborated closely with Nationale-Nederlanden from the start, alongside Fokkema & Partners and other stakeholders. From the initial design to the final execution and even beyond.

In search
of balance
To realize our sustainable vision down to the tiniest detail, together we developed seven ‘sustainable paths’ that served as a compass to guide all the choices. For example, we used formaldehyde-free materials and connections that could be easily disassembled. By using safe and healthy materials, we enhance both Nationale-Nederlanden’s work environment and the sustainability of our own working methods.

Reusing
walls and doors
We harvested many of the materials from existing Nationale-Nederlanden locations. One remarkable example is the reuse of walls and doors from old Nationale-Nederlanden offices, which were transformed into acoustic panels. The old leatherette upholstery of the benches in Germany was upcycled into plastic watering cans. Although downgraded to a less high-value usage, the material nonetheless gained a new life.

Pure materials
Gielissen’s early involvement in the process meant that smart choices could be made. In every project, we strive for the right balance between sustainability and functional requirements without compromising quality. Consequently, we prefer using pure materials that don’t need any extra finishing, although this isn’t always feasible. For certain elements, such as a pantry that needs to be water-resistant, a protective layer is essential.
We also like to use innovative materials. For instance, we used mycelium and Resysta in this interior project for Nationale-Nederlanden. What’s more, all the materials in this project were used in a modular way so they can easily be replaced later if necessary.
Teamwork as
success factor
A circular project of this scale, with such high demands, can only succeed through teamwork. Biweekly workshop sessions with architect Fokkema & Partners, project management bureau Stevens van Dijck and the Nationale Nederlanden project team fostered a dynamic of ongoing collaboration and exchange. For example, the wall builder discovered a shortage of glass doors. Gielissen still had a few. After consulting with the architect, they were replaced by wooden doors. Through open communication and quick decision-making, we found the best solutions together.
